Accessibility Institute Initiative
Building on the momentum and success of the Housing Through an Autism Lens (HAL) project, Sinneave supported the Neuroinclusivity in Housing Initiative at Carleton University’s Accessibility Institute.
The initiative focused on knowledge exchange and applied research to advance neuroinclusive housing.
The project was active from October 2022 to November 2025.
The Project:
This work was supported through several activities. The team:
- Created a Neurodivergent Advisory Group to help guide the initiative.
- Gathered resources from other organizations.
- Showcased 16 promising practices on topics like interior design, pets, and affordable housing.
- Conducted community research.
- Used research findings to create the Bright Ideas Book.
What is the Bright Ideas Book?
The Bright Ideas Book is a collection of stories, strategies, and lessons learned from the work of the Accessibility Institute project team. It shares practical ideas that can be adapted to support neuroinclusive housing, collaboration, and community connection.
Community Insights
In addition to the Bright Ideas Book, this work highlighted how community voice, lived experience, and intentional collaboration shaped our approach to neuroinclusivity in housing.
These community insights highlight the perspectives and partnerships that informed learning and show how Autistic and other neurodivergent people influence meaningful change across the housing ecosystem.
Autistic and Neurodivergent Advisory Committee
For this Community Insight, we introduce members of the Autistic and Neurodivergent Advisory Committee. They share why they joined the committee, why neuroinclusive housing matters to them, and what they hope to gain from participating in this work.
Positive Experiences in Housing
For this Community Insight, members of our Neurodivergent Advisory Committee share their positive experiences finding, moving into, and living in housing. They describe the people, supports, and experiences that helped make their housing more neuroinclusive.
Advisory Committees That Support Community Voice
For this Community Insight, we share considerations for creating advisory committees that support community voice. We describe how our Autistic and Neurodivergent Advisory Committee was formed and how committee meetings were facilitated.
Affordable Housing Meets Neuroinclusivity
For this Community Insight, we explore the connections between affordable housing and neuroinclusivity.
Reflections on Integrating Community Voice
For this community insight, we reflect on what we learned through creating spaces for collective learning, connection, and reflection about housing success for Autistic and other neurodivergent people in Canada.
