Insights for neuroinclusive housing

On April 17, 2023 our team at Neuroinclusivity in Housing conducted a pre-summit workshop at the Canadian Autism Leadership Summit on the topic of Maintaining Momentum in Autism and Housing. We had deep and informative discussion and here are the session insights from over 300 attendee comments!

Session attendees shared in our poll that:

  • they are focusing on advocacy
  • they had few collaborations with some groups such as builders, developers, and financial institutions
  • they have a desire to engage more with others in the housing ecosystem

Our project, Neuroinclusivity in Housing, will support the National Network in providing opportunities for collaboration

Session attendees wrote during the discussions about:

  • not being aware of positive initiatives in housing
  • having only a general sense of government plans to increase housing
  • examples from Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec

We were surprised to learn of only a few specific examples of positive initiatives in neuroinclusive housing

Our project will find and share more initiatives including those in indigenous communities, other jurisdictions, and abroad

fostering and repairing the trust in support systems so Autistic people feel safe coming forward for support

the government needs to recognize the needs of neurodivergent individuals

Session attendees identified an extensive list of individuals, groups, and organizations that should be part of the National Network

Many of these people need to coordinate and work together to ensure successful housing

Our knowledge mobilization platform will create a space for all these groups to find common ground and learn about good practices for neuroinclusive housing

Image of sample list of roles to include in housing

affordable housing doesn’t mean it’s accessible or quality housing

everyone, everywhere, housing is a right

Session attendees raised problems that were grounded in lived experiences such as:

  • policy barriers
  • navigating systems
  • obtaining financial support
  • living environment concerns

Their suggestions for improvement were insightful and highlighted broad needs and priorities

Our initiative aims to facilitate the uptake of tools and resources that address and support these needs

With a coordinated effort we can affect greater change. Our next step will be to find and connect with the people and organizations that are making positive impacts in Canada and ensure that their progress can be shared across the growing National Network.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Canadian Autism Leadership Summit 2023 pre-summit and for engaging with our project, Neuroinclusivity in Housing. We look forward to connecting with you again soon!
